Fate & luck was the running theme this past weekend. It's strange the way life works and it truly never ceases to amaze me.
'A' and I headed to Montreal a few days before the festival. We stayed in this amazing apartment in the city. At night we could see all of the high rise buildings lights glistening through the darkness. It was just the two of us this year ready to rock out to some of our most beloved musical artists.
On the first day we danced to RL Grime in the electronic area and had a blast. Looking around you could see girls barely clothed and teenagers high on everything and anything. I am a bit too old for that scene as I feel my youth has somehow passed me by but Adam and I still know how to enjoy our selves with dancing, beer and some Smirnoff.
Night was setting in and we headed over to watch Florence and the Machine which was a heavenly experience. Her voice echoed across the crowd of thousands. I could hear onlookers gasping in awe as she hit the high notes. Many were calling it a religious experience. 'A' and I took pictures of unsuspecting people. Something I have grown to love doing ever since this festival.
The next day fate settled in. We headed over to watch rap artist Nas and spotted a familiar looking girl. A friend of ours who I met for the first time at the first Osheaga in 2013. Adam and I went back and fourth wondering "could it be her" "it looks like her". So eventually we headed over and out of hundreds of thousands of people found our friend Aneta.
She was there with her awesome husband Drew who was working for the skate company Vans that weekend. We hugged with excitement and found it strange that out of all the people at this festival we would somehow stumble upon each other.
As the music began so did the monsoon of rain. We got completely rained out. The crowd went wild as the rain soaked our clothes into our bones.
The clouds cleared and Aneta and Drew took us to their little spot in the park where Drew's van was. He gave us shirts to change into and it was my first experience not wearing any pants at a concert. Mind you the shirt was quite long and I had been wearing little shorts under my dress that day. However it did feel liberating to have my legs be so free.
The night ended with Kendrick Lamar and "A' dancing. We snapped as many pictures as we could of each other and the people around us.
Day three and the last of the festival. As we walked towards the train station my husband whispered to me. "Yoooo" he said. I was curious as to what he was so in awe about and that's when we saw rapper Mos Def walking down the street with who I assume was his family.
I love seeing celebrities just being normal people without all the fuss. We slowed down a bit as he walked by us then continued on with our journey. I know 'A' was excited.
At the festival we headed over to the electronic stage where we ate snacks and watched the youth dance and party. I took a photo of a beautiful dragon tattoo on some girls back and a couple happy as can be.
We later met up with Aneta and Drew again at their van and decided we would watch some of the artists together. I asked some very stylish girls if I could take a photo of their amazing sequined outfits.
We lost Aneta and Drew within the crowd but found Aneta yet again for the second time somehow in a crazy pit of people. That's how I knew we were supposed to spend this weekend with them. To not only find someone once, but twice in a crowd of well over a hundred thousand people is totally fate.
I watched Alt-J as I swayed side to side. I closed my eyes to take in the beauty of their sound. Enjoying every second of their set.
Night was falling quickly and Aneta, Drew, Adam and I headed into the big pit of people to completely let go and rock out to The Black Keys. There within the crowd I spotted a familiar face. A model friend of mine named Nicole. We had hoped to somehow meet up, but with cell reception being so bad at the festival I didn't think it would happen. Not to mention we already spotted Aneta twice what are the odds that I would find Nicole too?
Well I did. I saw her beautiful face in the crowd and reached for her arm. We hugged and talked about how insane it was that we would find each other in such a massive crowd. I took photos of Nicole dancing with her friends and enjoying the music. Thank you Nicole for allowing me to photograph you rocking out!
I left my camera out and began to photograph as much as I could. Between 'A' and I we really got to photograph so many unsuspecting people within their element. It was an amazing experience for me because I am usually very shy when it comes to approaching strangers.
However it seemed like no one cared. No one minded that I was pointing my camera at them. Everyone was enjoying the music in peace.
At the end of the show Aneta and Drew headed over to our apartment. We had found the roof top pool and were ready to jump in after three very long days of baking in the sun. The four of us caught up, laughed and drank wine and beer. It was such a wonderful way to end the weekend.
It was three amazing days of music that I don't think I will ever forget xx
Images by both Adam and I. Special thanks to Aneta for the shots of me and Adam.
